The ARoS museum in Aarhus, Denmark, has appointed Rebecca Matthews as director.
Matthews comes from Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, which she ran for just seven months having taken the directorship in May 2021. Prior to that however she spent five years as director of the European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 and two years as director of the international educational charity, Goodenough College in London. Previously she has been the British Council’s director of global partnerships and led the Australia Council for the Arts’ international programmes including the Venice Biennale in 2003 and 2005.
The oldest public art museum in Denmark outside Copenhagen, which receives 600,000 visitors annually, is set for expansion this year, with plans to create a new 1,000 square metres subterranean exhibition space and a new permanent work by James Turrell titled The Dome. With the latter the museum is likely seeking to replicate the success of an Olafur Eliasson architectural intervention, Your Rainbow Panorama, which after its inauguration in 2011 saw visitor numbers double.
