Jenny Schlenzka will be the new director of Berlin’s Gropius Bau, leaving her current position as the Executive Artistic Director of New York’s Performance Space. Schlenzka will succeed Stephanie Rosenthal, Gropius Bau’s director from 2018 to 2022.
The Berlin-born curator has been known for her advocacy for time-based art and performances. During her six-year tenure at the Performance Space, Schlenzka worked with Hannah Black, Donna Haraway and Juliana Huxtable, among others, and considerably expanded the institution’s scope and reach. She was previously Associate Curator at MoMA PS1 in New York and the Assistant Curator in the Department of Media and Performance Art at MoMA.
‘I have been thrilled by the developments at the Gropius Bau in recent years and am delighted to continue the process of opening up the institution in dialogue with the city of Berlin and its many communities – in collaboration with the artists and the team at the Gropius Bau and the Berliner Festspiele’, Schlenzka said in a statement. ‘The increased inclusion of ephemeral art in the programme of major exhibitions will also play a significant role and broaden the institution’s mission in the future.’
