The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa has announced Jean-François Bélisle as its new director and CEO, succeeding Angela Cassie. Since the mid 1990s, Bélisle has served managerial roles in multiple international art institutions. His current, seven-year tenure as Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Joliette Art Museum has seen a major transformation of and increase in museum community and in-person attendance. Bélisle has also curated large-scale exhibitions including the inaugural edition of Montréal’s Papier Art Fair.
‘I believe that art can change society, and look forward to collaborating with the Gallery’s staff, as well as artists from across the country, to ensure our institution continues to be a fantastic force for good,’ Bélisle said in a statement.
Bélisle will begin his new role on 17 July 2023.
