The 2023 shortlist for the Film London Jarman Award has been announced today. The shortlisted artists are Ayo Akingbade, Andrew Black, Julianknxx, Sophie Koko Gate, Karen Russo and Rehana Zaman. The winner of the prize will receive £10,000.

The shortlist was selected by Matthew Barrington, Cinema Curator, Barbican; Shaminder Nahal, Commissioning Editor, Arts and Topical, Channel 4; Artist and 2020 Jarman Award joint-winner, Michelle Williams Gamaker; and Lila Rawlings, Head of Creative: Film and Television for director Alfonso Cuarón’s company Esperanto Filmoj and Film London Board Member.

‘This year’s shortlist continues to reflect the fluid boundary pushing work being made within the ever-growing field of artists’ moving image in the UK. The poetic, socially conscious, and singular nature of much of the work connects both to the legacies of previous awardees as well as that of Derek Jarman, and his large body of politically engaged work. Artists’ moving image has a varied and multifaceted lineage in the UK, and this year’s shortlisted artists continue to forge new paths and create new engagements within the field of experimental film and video’, said Matthew Barrington on behalf of the Jury.

The winner of the Jarman Award will be announced in November at London’s Barbican Centre.
