Holly Roussell has joined the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art as curator. The news follows the appointment of Peter Eleey as curator-at-large, as the China-based institution continues to expand.
Roussell will organise exhibitions in keeping with UCCA’s mission to situate contemporary art in China within the global discourse, and help consolidate expansion of the museum’s international collaborations. Founded in Beijing in 2007, UCCA has recently opened two new museum outposts across the country: UCCA Dune in Aranya, Beidaihe in 2018, and UCCA Edge in Shanghai in May 2021. Commenting on her appointment, Roussell said: ‘I am very excited to join UCCA during this pivotal moment of the museum’s growth across three cities in China. I look forward to merging our shared commitment for the greater contextualization of Chinese contemporary art.’
Based between Switzerland and China, Roussell is a curator, museologist and art historian specialising in photography and Chinese contemporary art. She previously served from 2013 to 2017 as coordinator of travelling exhibitions, as well as the Prix Elysée, a photography prize organised by the Swiss Musée de l’Elysée. In parallel, Roussell organised over 20 exhibitions for festivals, biennales and museums internationally. She has contributed as author to a number of exhibition catalogues, artist books and international publications on photography. She is currently collaborating with Pixy Liao on the artist’s first museum solo exhibition at Fotografiska New York (2021) and Fotografiska Stockholm (2022). In 2022, Roussell will join the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul as International Curatorial Researcher in residence.
