Freelands Award announces shortlist

The £100,000 prize will be awarded to one of six UK visual-arts organisations presenting the work of a mid-career female artist

The award, presented by the Freelands Foundation, founded in 2015 by Elisabeth Murdoch (whose brother James recently took a controlling stake in Art Basel’s parent company, MCH Group), will go to one of the following institutions: Firstsite, Colchester; MK Gallery, Milton Keynes; Modern Art Oxford; Towner Eastbourne; Turner Contemporary, Margate; and the Whitworth, Manchester.

The winner, chosen by a jury comprising Murdoch, artist Monster Chetwynd, curator and writer Juliana Engberg, Jenni Lomax (independent curator and former Director, Camden Art Centre) and Zoe Whitley (Director, Chisenhale Gallery) will be announced in December 2020. The award includes a £25,000 fee for the artist whose solo exhibition makes up the winning proposal.
