Dhaka Art Summit 2014

The second edition of Dhaka Art Summit is to take place over three days in February. The event, which mixes a largescale survey show of artists from South Asian countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; with solo presentations (including projects by Jitish Kallat, Runa Islam, Rashid Rana and a performance work by Nikhil Chopra among them); a curating summit; and presentations by commercial galleries from the region. Highlights promise to be Raqs Media Collective’s public commission to take over 160 of the Bangladesh capital’s billboards, and a new series of works by Shilpa Gupta, inspired by the artist’s travels through the lawless border enclaves between India and Bangladesh, which are known as ‘chitmahals’, where it is estimated around 51,000 people live with no public amenities. The project includes drawings made from a prohibited cough syrup, phantasmic stone engravings and photographs and historical records with incisions.
