The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) and the Sobey Art Award foundation have announced this year’s shortlist. The shortlisted artists each represent one of Canada’s five geographical regions: Séamus Gallagher (Atlantic), Anahita Norouzi (Québec), Michèle Pearson Clarke (Ontario), Kablusiak (Prairies and the North) and Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill (West Coast & Yukon).
The winner of the prize, to be announced in November, will be awarded $10,000 and the remaining four artists will each receive $25,000. An exhibition featuring their selected works will be on view at the NGC from 13 October 2023 until 3 March 2024.
The shortlist was selected by an independent jury team consisting of Pamela Edmonds, Director and Curator, Dalhousie Art Gallery, Halifax (Atlantic); Eve-Lyne Beaudry, Curator, Contemporary Art, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Québec (Quebec); Wanda Nanibush, Curator, Indigenous Art, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (Ontario); Haema Sivanesan, Director, Leighton Studios and Program Partnerships, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Banff (Prairies and the North); Matthew Hyland, Executive Director, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (West Coast & Yukon); Cecilia Alemani, Donald R. Mullen, Jr. Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art, New York, and Curator of the 59th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2022 (International).
