Please join us at the ArtReview Bar on the evening of Wednesday 25 July for drinks and a screening of Gernot Wieland’s short film Thievery and Songs (2016), to celebrate the Summer issue of ArtReview. The event is free to attend.
The cover artist of the Summer issue of ArtReview, Wieland’s work, writes Mark Rappolt, ‘juxtaposes fact and fiction, horror and humour, profundity and bathos’ in considering ‘humanity’s search for a place in the world’. His witty and moving twenty-minute film Thievery and Songs takes for a starting point the German folk tale ‘The Town Musicians of Bremen’ – in which a dog, a cat, a donkey and a rooster occupy a house – and weaves in a critique of contemporary capitalism, a meditation on Austria’s recent history, childhood experiences of Catholicism, psychotherapy and the artist dressed as a dog.
Doors open at 6.30 p.m.; the screening will start at 7 p.m. with drinks available at the (cash only) bar before and after the film. Copies of the current issue will be available to buy: it also features Martin Herbert on Bruce Nauman and finding art in the everyday; Chloe Aridjis on the macabre in Mexican art and life; Luc Tuymans on the Baroque; Aaron Angell on the London Museum’s exhibition fatberg; Susan Cianciolo in conversation with Ross Simonini; Christian Viveros-Fauné on different instances of the monstrous in art, and much more.
