Sethembile Msezane lives and works in Cape Town. Using performance, photography, film, sculpture and installation, her work explores issues around spirituality, commemoration and African knowledge systems. Msezane’s work came to international attention in 2015, when she staged a performance during the removal of the Cecil Rhodes statue, which was at the heart of the wider #RhodesMustFall movement to decolonise education in South Africa. She went on to stage performances for the ICA Arts Live Festival in Cape Town, the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, and took part in Documeta 14, in both Athens and Kassel, as part of iQhiya, a collective of South African women artists defying structural injustices. The same year, she was a speaker at the TED Global conference held in Arusha, Tanzania. In recent years, her work was included in L’envol at La Maison Rouge, Paris (2018); All Things Being Equal…, the inaugural exhibition of the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town (2017); Kwasuka Sukela, Gallery MoMo, Cape Town (2017); and Re[as]sisting Narratives, Framer Framed, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2016).

Msezane will also present Signal Her Return III, a new performance interrogating the historical vilification of women, on 1 February at Nottingham’s New Art Exchange more details
