Curator and writer Stefanie Hessler joins Samuel Solnick, author of Poetry and the Anthropocene and cofounder of Liverpool University’s Literature and Science Hub, to consider how new ideas around ecological systems, and human engagements with the environment, are feeding into the practice of contemporary art and writing. The talk will be moderated by Ben Eastham.

Stefanie Hessler is co-curator of the 6th Athens Biennale and the symposium ‘Practices of Attention’ at the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo. She is also cofounder (with Carsten Höller) of Andquestionmark, Stockholm, and curator of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21)—Academy in London, a fellowship programme on a research vessel investigating human impact on the oceans. She is co-editor of the anthology Life Itself (Moderna Museet and Walther König, 2016) and editor of Tidalectics. Imagining an Oceanic Worldview through Art and Science (MIT Press, 2018). She is curating Joan Jonas’s exhibition at the Ocean Space in Venice, Italy in 2019.
Sam Solnick is the author of Poetry and the Anthropocene (Routledge, 2017), which explores questions of ecology, biology and technology in contemporary poetry. As a lecturer in English Literature at the University of Liverpool, where he is co-director of the Literature and Science Hub, his focus is on the relationships between the two disciplines. He is currently working on a new project that explores representations of climate change across literature, performance and visual culture.
