Zanny Begg and Elise McLeod’s ‘The City of Ladies’ (2017) draws on Christine de Pizan’s book of the same name to engage with the issues confronting young feminist activists in contemporary Paris. Each time the film is screened the fragments compile in different ways according to an algorithm designed for the purpose. This creates over 300,000 possible narratives, and invites multiple readings of feminism. ‘The City of Ladies’ includes interviews with Hélène Cixous, Silvia Federici, Sam Bourcier, Fatima Ezzahra Benomar and Sharone Omankoy. The film lasts 20 minutes. Begg is currently working on her next film, The Beehive, which focuses on the life of the late anti-gentrification activist Juanita Nielsen in Sydney – you can help support the project here.
Rosanna Mclaughlin is a writer and editor, based in London. In 2017 she was a TAARE resident with the British Council Caribbean, researching responses to the death of Ana Mendieta. She is the author of ‘Double-tracking’, forthcoming with Little Island Press.
