New York’s Artists Space has appointed new deputy director Kelly Taxter. She assumed the role on 6 February, taking over from Miriam Katzeff.
Established in 1972 in downtown Manhattan, the nonprofit art space has played an important role in New York’s alternative arts scene. Over the last 50 years, Artists Space has fostered critical, conceptually driven exhibitions and supported emerging artists, introducing to the public names such as Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler, and Laurie Anderson.
‘It was a formative institution for me personally, where in the mid-1990s, when I was still an art student, I regularly attended shows and lectures that made lasting impressions and helped shape my career. It’s an honour to join the team and communities of Artists Space as we create its next chapter’, Taxter said in a statement.
Previously, Taxter served as the Barnett and Annalee Newman Curator of Contemporary Art at New York’s Jewish Museum from 2013 to 2021, before directing the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York. Her co-owned gallery Taxter & Spengemann in New York ran from 2003 to 2011.
