75 artists to take part in the 2022 edition of the photography biennial
The participating artists in the 13th edition of the Bamako Encounters, one of the most established art and photography event on the African continent, have been announced. Around 75 artists from the African artworld have been invited to take part in this edition, now scheduled to take place from 20 October to 20 December 2022 across various venues in the Malian capital.
Directed by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, this edition of the biennial is titled Maa ka Maaya ka ca a yere kono — On Multiplicity, Difference, Becoming, and Heritage, and aims to celebrate ‘difference and divergence in all their shades’ to counter the universalist, homogenising discourse of a globalised world.

The 13th edition will also present individual retrospective exhibitions for Moroccan artist Daoud Aoulad Syad, Cuba-born, US-based Maria Magdalena Campos Pons, Cameroonian photographer Samuel Fosso, London-based Joy Gregory and South African Jo Ractliffe, as well as an exhibition organised by PromoFemme, a Mali-based centre of audiovisual education for young women.
Soh Bejeng Ndikung is working with a team of curators comprising: Akinbode Akinbiyi, artist and independent curator; Meriem Berrada, artistic director of Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech; Tandazani Dhlakama, assistant curator at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town; and Liz Ikiriko, artist and assistant curator at Art Gallery York University in Toronto.
