The Design Museum in London announced it will be moving from its London Bridge location to its new venue on Kensington High Street Street on 24 November 2016. The space, a Grade II-listed 1960s landmark building (formerly the Commonwealth Institute building), is currently undergoing a £83 million refurbishment directed by British designer John Pawson that will notably increase the museum’s size threefold from its previous location. The space will include the museum’s first permanent collection display and a library and archive. ArtReview contributor Mark Sladen will be joining the new venture as head of exhibitions, after serving as director at the ICA, London (2007–10) and Kunsthalle Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2010–13).
The current venue will close on 30 June, with Weekend Punk, a two-day celebration of the influence and legacy of punk design. The lease has been sold by Sir Terence Conran, the original driving force behind the museum, to the architect Zaha Hadid, who will use it for her archive and for architecture exhibitions
